dirtyjuan an organic typeface
I started in Adobe Illustrator and finished on glyphs. I wanted to create a typeface that spoke to the creative world with a background of shopping local and eating local!
The Inspiration
Designed in DC Scarpelli’s Type Design foundry at the Academy of Art University, our mission was simple– design something to overcome the typeface burnout. Over the course of the semester, as we learned more about type classifications and ligatures, I quickly realized it was going to be a fun challenge. This gave birth to the solution of my problems– design a Dirty Juan workhorse.
Starting with sketches I knew I wanted to do something with an organic feel along the lines of food. I started with words I liked and started to eliminated and choose what direction I wanted this typeface to go in.
Setting up my Illustrator file.
Since the key purpose of this font was to create an organic feel, it made sense to start with big hand-drawn letters. I had to start with guides for consistency. This is when I started to scan my letters and started using the pen tool to build the letters. I learned that the less points the better.
The beginning wasn’t so great but that’s okay!
At the start I was having a hard time understanding how to reuse letters to make new once.
Using Glyphs App for the first time
I learned how to set up an Illustrator File for Glyphs App To make the transfer to Glyphs App easier later, I realized it's best to set up your Illustrator file so that you can quickly copy and paste each glyph.
